Skateboarding

It's December 1999, less than ten days before the millennium. a phone call alerted us that a street skateboarding demo and competition was going to be held at a closed street in La Molina District. We head over there and enjoyed a good show. Most of the known Peruvian skateboarders were there

Alberto "Naranjo" Montes entertaining the crowd with a stylish Benihana.

The event was sponsored by Gatorade and Adidas and the music was provided by "DJ Pedro", probably his first show ever and hopefully his last one too, he,he. The course was a mix of curbs, benches, banks and a jump ramp, enough terrain to attack  for rippers like "El Ņaņo" who was just back from a skateboarding trip in New York, or the classic Alberto "Naranjo" Montes, who is said to have a secret vert ramp at his house, for his own personal use.

"La gentita skater", we recognize Chubi, Gerson and the classic borracho Ricky.

Other people kickin' ass that day included Ricardo Mena, who threw several very consistent runs and Ronald Gonzales who always surprises the crowd with unexpected tricks. At the end it was a good day. Everybody had fun and the sponsors were happy. We hope to see more of these events happening, now that its clear that skateboarding is not a fashion like rollerblading was, Skateboarding is here to stay.
