Campeonato Nacional e Internacional
Huacachina 2000
Diciembre 28 del 2000

We're back! And finally presenting the action from the International Sandboarding event held at the Huacachina Oasis in Ica, Peru this past December 28th, 2000. The event was sanctioned by DRI (Dune Riders International

and was a valid event for the world sandboarding tour. Competitors from Lima, Ica, Chimbote, Brasil and France gathered at the beautiful Oasis to battle for the glory and the cash prizes, courtesy of www.peruboarding.com

The event started with some technical difficulties. The lift installed by ASBICA (Asociacion de Sandboard de Ica) broke down early in

the morning. Fortunately there were some generous locals with big pickup trucks which helped the riders go quickly to the top of the dunes. Our thanks are not extended to the Ica police, which didn't give us a ride 'cause they didn't want to waste their gas!

The SLALOM

The competition started with the slalom event which was held on the main dune in a course about 250 mts long. Digiacomo (Digi) Dias, current Junior champion from Brasil, impressed the judges with his speed.

Willy Landazuri and Luis Miranda also had some good runs. Marco Malaga from Peru and Digiacomo Dias from Brasil disputed the finals. The times were extremely close but Marco was a little bit

faster earning the first place in the slalom race! Marco commented that going to the Germany worlds helped him win the slalom: "seeing those guys in Germany and practicing in that terrain definitely gave me some advantage".

Luis Miranda from Ica placed fourth in the slalom with nice style and solid turns

It's important to note that Huacachina is blessed with probably the best sandboarding terrain in the world. The main dune is perfect for this type of events and the locals are getting better and better every day.

The BIG AIR

Renato Mendoza from Ica captured the 5th possition.

The second and last event of the day was the "Big Air" competition. The event was moved to a dune close to the Huacachina main road. Attendance for the second event was great with lots of Journalists and Video crews filming the jumps. Dr. Sandro Garcia,

who didn't compete in the slalom but saved himself for the big air, surprised everybody with nice grabs and even 180's! The Ica locals were also very brave and Luis Miranda landed a few nice tricks including some backside 180's.

Willy "Gutilio" Landazuri stomped the best indy grabs and big 180's. Marco started with a big method air, almost landed a frontside 540 on his second jump and stomped a perfect frontside 360 on his third and last jump!.

Digi do Brasil, feeling the pressure, decided to go for it and stomped a big front-flip grab. The crowd went wild! Digi couldn't land his second jump but a nice shifty indy on his third jump placed him on top of the Big Air list.

The RESULTS

The final results couldn't be more impressive. Luis in 4th place, Guti in 3rd and Marco and Digi tied for the first place! They all shared the cash and the trophies!

Good friends Marco from Peru and Digi from Brasil shared the first overall place!

On an emotive moment Digi donated his board to Luis in recognition to his performance and love for the sport. We last heard that Luis was riding much better with Digi's board but managed to break the board trying a new trick on the big ramp, oh well………

Luis, Digi, Marco, Renato and Guti on the podium with the cash and trophies!

The event was a success thanks to the organizers, Matias Grados, Hernan Correa and el "Tronco". Thanks to the support of the Ica IPD and all the sponsors. They are planning more events for this year. We at Peruboarding will keep you informed!

PERU

Peru é o paraiso do sandboarder, pois tem as maiores e melhores dunas do planeta. As dunas são fantasticas.

Digi- Indy shifty in Huacachina, Peru

Looks like Mars, eh? It's Peru!

Marco, Matias and Digi
