Huacachina 2000 Sandboard Competition

Competitive sandboarding is back to Ica! The "Huacachina 2000 Sandboard Competition" was held on Sept. 30th in the beautiful Huacachina Oasis (300 km. South of Lima).
|
|
|
|
|
|
This was the first competition organized by the Club de Sandboard de Ica and has set the base for the Peruvian Sandboard Nationals
to be held on December 28th also in Huacachina, an amazing Oasis surrounded by perfect dunes as tall as 700 feet.
|
|
|
|
|
|
The event was sanctioned by the Association Peruana de Snowboarding y Sandboarding and by DRI (Dune Riders International), the world governing body for Sandboarding
|
|
|
|
|
This is the first event in Peruvian history that is sanctioned by DRI, which means that the first 10 positions in the overall category will be part of the world ranking, with a determined number of points
assigned to each competitor depending on the final standings.
|
|
|
|
More than 30 competitors representing Lima, Ica and Australia battled for the tittle in the Slalom and Big Air events.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Luis Miranda, a sandboarding legend in Ica impressed the judges with consistent runs and speed, placing 1st in both slalom and big air events.
|
|
|
|
|
Following Luis very closely was John Valle from Ica who swears he will kick Luise's ass in the December competition.
But as organizer Eng. Matias Grados points, the Sandboard Nationals in December promise to be a
much more competitive event. William Landázuri from Lima has already confirmed his participation. Marco Málaga will also be there and legend Jack Smith (USA) is also willing to participate. Cash prizes seem to be a
possibility due to some generous sponsors. Don't miss it, the event will be held on December 28th, 2000!
